Effects of a Reckless Driving Conviction on a CDL
Many CDL employers will fire any driver who receives a reckless driving conviction because their insurance policy requires them to do so. But even if you keep your job you may not keep your CDL License IF:
- You get a reckless driving charge while driving a commercial vehicle OR
- Your get a reckless driving charge while driving any vehicle and you are convicted of another serious traffic offense within 3 years.
These rules are based on the Federal Rules which are adopted in most states and likely apply even if your commercial driver’s license (CDL) is not from Virginia.
WARNING: Getting a speeding ticket that is 15 mph over the limit and Following Too Closely count as a serious traffic offenses just like reckless driving, so getting a reckless driving charge reduced to a 15 mph over speeding ticket may have the same result as a reckless driving conviction.
